Doutorado em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores pelo Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa.
Na sua tese intitulada "Multi-Modal Behavioral Biometrics Based on HCI and Electrophysiology" são apresentadas novas modalidades de biometria comportamental que constituem um importante contributo para o estado da arte na área.
É fundador e director-geral da empresa PLUX, startup inovadora de carácter tecnológico dedicada à Engenharia de sistemas e sensores médicos sem fios, onde coordena uma equipa de investigação com competências em microelectrónica, processamento de biosinais e desenvolvimento de software.
Pertence ao grupo de Teoria da Comunicação e Reconhecimento de Padrões do Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), pólo de Lisboa, onde realizou os seus estudos de Doutoramento sob a orientação da Professora Ana Fred.
É Professor Auxiliar no Departamento de Física da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa
Em 2007 ganhou uma bolsa da Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento, através da qual foi bolseiro de investigação na Michigan State University (EUA), no Laboratório de Biometria e Processamento de Imagem liderado pelo Investigador de renome internacional Dr. Anil Jain.
Foi docente na Escola Superior de Tecnologia de Setúbal de 2000 a 2007, leccionando disciplinas na área cientifica de Inteligência Artificial.
Como reconhecimento do seu trabalho pelo European Biometric Forum, ficou entre os três finalistas do EBF European Biometric Research Award 2007 atribuído a doutoramentos na área de Biometria.
Em 2008 foi o vencedor do Prémio ISA-Millenium BCP “Futuras Promessas”, atribuido aos melhores trabalhos de doutoramento nas áreas da Engenharia Física, Electrónica e Telecomunicações, Engenharia Electrotécnica, Engenharia Informática e de Sistemas e ainda Engenharia Biomédica nas áreas de engenharia electrotécnica e engenharia biomédica.
É casado e pai de três filhas.

PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon.
His thesis entitled "Multi-Modal Behaviour Biometrics Based on HCI and Electrophysiology" presents new behavioral biometrics modalities which are an important contribute for the state-of-the-art in the field.
He is a founder and CEO of PLUX, a technology-based innovative startup in the field of systems and wireless medical sensors, where he currently coordinates a multidisciplinary team that covers microelectronics, biosignal processing and software development.
Hugo Gamboa is also part of the Communication Theory and Patterns Recognition Group at the Telecommunications Institute (IT), Lisbon, where he has developed his PhD research under the supervision of Professor Ana Fred.
He is a Assistant Professor at the Physics Department of the
Sciences and Technology Faculty of the New University of Lisbon
In 2007 he was awarded with a grant from the Luso-American Development Foundation which led him to conduct research at the Pattern Recognition and Image Processing Lab, directed by the worldwide recognized researcher Dr. Anil Jain, at Michigan State University (USA).
From 2000 to 2007 he was a Professor at Escola Superior de Tecnologia de Setúbal, where he taught in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
In recognition of his work by the European Biometric Forum, he was among the three finalists of the EBF European Biometric Research Award 2007, which awards PhD works on Biometrics.
In 2008 he was the winner of the Portuguese National Award “Futuras Promessas” ISA/Millennium BCP, granted to the best PhD thesis on Physics, Electronics, Informatics or Biomedical Engineering fields.
Hugo Gamboa is married and has three daughters.
