With the increase of the mean life expectancy and the birth decrease, the developed world is preparing to live the reality of an inverted age pyramid. This means that many elderly people will live many years by themselves or in the company of other elderly members and with little or no support from the younger family counterparts. Given that people are also keeping healthier and active until late, the option of going to a retirement home is increasingly less attractive to those reaching the retirement age and want to enjoy the life which is still ahead. Nonetheless, despite the greater activity and independence, the age will keep acting as a gradual process where people will lose motor and cognitive abilities, requiring significantly more attention on their health status. In order to combine an independent life with the safety and comfort of a "protective" home, Ambient Assisted Living offers the required technologies that will allow and autonomous (by easy access to home automation and devices through a common and simplified interface), and secure living (by permanently monitoring vital signs and anomalous situations as falls, flooding, among others). The UCH platform, which is an outcome from the i2Home R&D project funded by the EC (under the IST program), currently allows the integration of various devices that are currently found at peoples homes. This project aims the expansion of the platform to further include vital signs monitoring and the user interaction with the environment. Additionally there is a data mining and alarm generation component which detects variations in the users daily patterns which can be traced to be potentially anomalous producing different types of alarms depending on the severity and emergency of the detect situation.

Com o aumento da esperança média de vida, acompanhado de uma redução da natalidade, o mundo desenvolvido prepara-se para viver a realidade de uma pirâmide etária invertida. Isso significa que muitas pessoas de idade irão viver um grande número de anos sozinhas ou na companhia de outras pessoas de idade, sem a presença de familiares mais novos. Uma vez que as pessoas também se mantêm saudáveis e activas até mais tarde, a opção por um lar de terceira idade é cada vez menos apelativa para quem chega à aposentação e pretende aproveitar os anos de liberdade que se lhe oferecem pela frente. Não obstante essa maior actividade e independência, a idade continuará a ser um processo gradual em que as pessoas perderão capacidades e autonomia física, exigindo simultaneamente uma maior monitorização do seu estado de saúde. Para que se possa conciliar uma vida independente com a segurança e o conforto de uma casa «protectora», o Ambient Assisted Living oferece as tecnologias que permitem viver com autonomia - acedendo a aparelhos e automações domésticos com uma interface única e simplificada - e segurança - com uma monitorização permanente de sinais vitais e situações anómalas como quedas, inundações, entre outras. Assim, a plataforma UCH, oriunda do projecto de I&DT Europeu i2home (programa IST), que permite integrar os diversos aparelhos existentes numa casa, é alargada para passar a incluir também a monitorização de sinais médicos e a monitorização da interacção do utilizador com a casa. O projecto abrange ainda um módulo de Data Mining e geração de alarmes, que detecta variações nos padrões de vida do utilizador e situações potencialmente anómalas, gerando diversos níveis de alarme consoante a potencial gravidade e emergência da situação detectada.
